Bird Whistle

Subject: Animal
Medium: Glazed ceramic
Size: 4 inches (9cm)
Date: 1996
Description: I just found this guy packed away in a box. I made him way back in 7th grade art class (1996). I think this is the oldest sculpture I still have, I know I did a sculpture of me and my dog Lady in 3rd grade but I’m pretty sure it’s lost forever. I also have other ceramic work from my school art classes, tiles, bowls, a vase, etc.
Status: Definitely not for sale, I love this whistle. Aside from the sentimental attachment it has a very pretty sound that reminds me of a mourning dove’s call.

I'm a sculptor and jewelry designer from Maine, I sell my work at I work primarily in polymer clay and mixed media. My work is inspired by science, nature, and my beloved cephalopods.

Make some more bird whistles and put them up for sale and see what happens. the story of it being your first piece makes it desireable.

I like your blue bird whistle. How do you go about glazing it without getting any of the glaze inside of the whistle so that it doesn’t mess up the whistling mechanism.

I was 13 when I made that whistle, so my memory of how I made the whistle might be a bit off after 17 years. I think I used a glaze resist in the openings to keep them clear in case I made any mistakes and then brushed the glaze on instead of dipping it.
